R & D is the intermediary between information and understanding. But R & D can’t be taught, it can only be done.
As an organisation we firmly believe in linking technical innovations to humanitarian response. It goes without saying that clean, drinking water in sufficient supply is the mainstay and starting point of any relief or intervention program. Easier said than done given that in moments of crisis and paucity of safe, drinking water go together.
Thus, we work closely with like-minded partners, such as Oxfam GB, RedR India, and the renowned research institute the Centre for Environmental Health Engineering at the University of Surrey UK to design and test water treatment and storage systems that are appropriate for use in emergency. Systems that can deliver under pressure and are a customized response to the requirements created by that particular emergency. The thing to remember is that even though there are similarities in emergencies, each one, at the end of the day is different. Thus, any water supply and storage technology must be flexible and resilient enough to fit the moment and potable enough to reach needy people in far-flung villages and hamlets-so that no one is denied timely help. With these objectives, we currently have a high technology testing facility in Ranje, near Pune. This site allows us to run extensive testing programmes on WatSan technology.
These facilities include:
• A laboratory
• Column testing kit
• Extensive quality testing equipment
• Large water storage facility
• A team of dedicated WASH experts
